Obtaining Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows XP Service Pack 2 is scheduled for release by
Microsoft on Monday, August 16, 2004. Workstations that are connected to the
Internet and configured with Automatic Update turned ON should begin
receiving notice from Windows Update that the new update is available.
Depending upon your situation, this may or may not be your best solution for
obtaining the update. The following information from a recent Microsoft
Technet newsletter describes your choices:
-
How to Get Windows XP SP2
For updating multiple computers, Microsoft recommends using the
266 MB network installer, available for download from the TechNet
IT Pro portal.
And soon, a CD containing this code will be available free upon request,
from the Windows
XP SP2 page.
Do not click download if you are updating just one computer: A
smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows
Update (Monday, August 16, 2004). To receive this
download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive
an optimized download of SP2. Please visit Protect
Your PC for more information on receiving
Windows XP SP2.
The Microsoft
Download Center site is your only authorized
web source for downloading a licensed copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2.
To report a website offering unlicensed copies of Windows XP SP2 for
download, please send e-mail to: piracy@microsoft.com
or visit the Software
Piracy Protection page.
Installing
Windows XP Service Pack 2
When installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, we suggest you
make the following choices.**
1. Determine how you should receive the update. If your
location has only one CDS32 workstation, then the Automatic Update method
should be sufficient. If your location has several computers that need to be
updated to service pack 2, then you should download the 266 MB file
mentioned above, or order the CD when it becomes available. In either case,
follow the steps below once the update begins asking for information. Also
note that you will have to reboot the computer to complete the installation.
2. Run the Setup method of your choice.
When asked whether to turn on or off automatic update,
make your choice. You may prefer to turn it off at this point and then set
specific setting in the steps below.
3. You may get a message asking about Virus Protection
Monitoring. If you are running Norton Antivirus or another Antivirus
program, and you trust that program to keep it's virus definition up to
date, then choose not to have Windows monitor this. You may also get a
message from Norton Antivirus that says another program wants it's status
information. You will probably want to tell Norton not to share this
information.
4. Service Pack 2 Setup will turn on the Windows
'Firewall' by default. Our initial test show that this will be ok. In most
cases CDS32 network traffic should still pass just fine with the default
settings.
You may get a message asking about the 'Connection
Manager'. If so, it is probably necessary to choose to 'Allow' the
Connection Manager to pass thru the firewall.
Should you experience a problem with connectivity or
transferring audio among workstations after installing Windows XP Service
Pack 2, we suggest you try disabling the firewall in your troubleshooting
procedures.
5.On the Security Center window, scroll to the bottom and
click the link for 'Automatic Updates'. We suggest you choose "Download
updates for me, but let me choose when to install them".
6. Reboot the computer and the installation is complete.
